Summary: Before the current manga “glut”, there were modest introductions of Asian comics to American audiences in the mid-1980s.  While most of these were Japanese manga, several Korean titles were issued by a small company called Eastern Comics.  These titles ranged from a fantasy martial arts comic, The Forbidden Kingdom, to Korea's #1 bestselling comic book, The Alien Baseball Team (released as Untouchables).  All of Eastern's titles were translated by Mr. Heinz Insu Fenkl while he was a graduate student in cultural anthropology.  With the recent influx of numerous Korean comics into the United States, Professor Fenkl, now an award-winning writer and a tenured professor of English, has begun to look northward and translate a few selected North Korean titles.  In his illustrated lecture, Professor Fenkl will discuss the nature of the Korean comic-book culture and the unique and surprising quality of comics from North Korea.

About Professor Fenkl: Heinz Insu Fenkl is on the faculty of the State University of New York (SUNY), New Paltz.  He is also the director of the Interstitial Studies Institute (ISIS) and a member of the Endicott Studio, an interdisciplinary organization devoted to the creation and support of mythic art.
